Description:

  • Engine cooling system not warm enough to start stable operation

Possible Symptoms:

  • Engine runs rough, missing or stumbling

  • Smoke coming from the tail pipe

  • Inoperative cruise control

  • The vehicle may enter limp mode

Possible Causes:

  • Disconnected plug to the Engine

  • Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor

  • Possible corrosion in the ECT sensor connector

  • Damage to the ECT sensor wiring to the ECM

  • Defective ECT sensor

  • The engine is low on coolant or has coolant leaks

  • The engine coolant thermostat is not opening at the proper temperature

  • The ECM is damaged

Related Parts:

  • Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor: The coolant temperature sensor measures the temperature of the engine coolant. Problems lead to engine overheating

Possible Solutions:

  • Start the vehicle (make sure the heater is off) and watch the Coolant Temperature values change. If the Coolant Temperature readings will not go above the 160 170 F mark within fifteen minutes, the thermostat is the most likely culprit.
